    Fine aggregate is a very important ingredient in construction industry. The river sand is best and cheapest fine aggregate available. Dragging out sand from riverbed is hazardous to ground water level. The rainwater that falls on the surface of ground percolates in to pervious soil and moves down by gravity. Excess water flows to river. Due to Sand present in the river the water head increases. More water-head results in more percolation. This helps in increasing the ground water level.

    Now-a-days construction works are going on in large scale, more sand is taken out from riverbed. This reduces the water head in river so reduces the percolation. Now a days it is observed that rain-fall is also reducing day by day. That may be the cumulative effect of excessive heat generation due to more use of fuel like Diesel and Petrol by vehicles and industries. Due to reduction of jungle and trees the absorption of heat is also reduced.

    Now due to less rain fall and less percolation of water in ground reduces the lower water table in ground to a substantial. This resulted in droughts in down stream.         

        The following simple experiment will show the effect of taking out Sand from river bed

Experiment :


    Take a small barrel. Make a small outlet (hole) in the bottom. Put this barrel on a table. Block the outlet by putting finger and fill 3 liters of water. Take out the finger and observe the flow of water from the outlet. It will fall on the ground at certain distance say "L". Take this reading and note down.

Next take out all the water from the barrel. Fill the barrel full with dry sand. Again block the outlet by putting finger over it. Pore same quantity of water i.e. 3 liters. Wait for few seconds, let the water reaches the bottom. Now take out the finger from the outlet. The water will start flowing from the outlet. It may be observed that the water this time is flowing with more pressure so it fall at a longer distance then earlier. Take this reading.
   
   

In both the cases we have use same barrel filled with same quantity of water. Water flows with more force when container is filled with sand. This shows that the presence of sand increases the water head and so more pressure for percolation of water in ground.

Again there are more advantages of sand if present in riverbed.

  • Less river water is exposed to Sun, so less water loss due to evaporation.
  • Sand in riverbed filters the water flowing down stream.
  • More percolation of rainwater, which increases water level in the ground.

    All this advantages can be achieved only by avoiding dragging of river sand. This can be achieved if Civil Engineers, Architects, and contractors decide not to use the river sand in constructions and concreting. This will help a lot in making a better ecosphere and reduced draughts.

    Now-a-days artificial sand is produced with the help of machines. This crushed sand is better substitute for river sand. Only a favorable decision of construction persons can save the nation from droughts. So be eco-friendly and serve the nation.
